  We will be offering pre-built images however they will be focused on developer stacks. =]

  And then allowing customers to share their own built images as well.

  What better way to ruin such a clean network by filling it up with unlawful spam bots. Result of this is companies worldwide blacklisting Digital Oceans IP Range. Thumbs up for such a great idea :/

  I'd prefer to be able to use images shared by the community. AWS does this with EBS images for EC2, and it's a really nice thing to have.

  As for officially provided images, the 2 examples provided in the title would be terrible choices. A Runescape bot would be oriented toward a very niche market, and I'm not even sure what a "YouTube viewer" would do. Just a proxy? You can do that over plain SSH.

  This is something for resellers. Digital Ocean should just sell pure virtual-servers.

  Providing pre-built images for various application development stacks is planned, but not the specific ones requested in this feature.

  Pre-set VPS's, sure.

  Abusing those VPS's by violating a companies TOS is purely selfish and could cause a lawsuit against the company (as its not offshore).

  @Dylan,

  You can't really "stop" botters from using the service if they provide details and legitimately sign up. That'd be on DO to kill off their service and from what I've seen, they do a pretty good job in catching those that sign up purely to abuse the service. Simply providing a template isn't going to cause abuse.

  @Adam,

  You can setup load-balancers using NGINX or Varnish, it's realistically a 5-10 minute setup if you already have a VPS with NGINX setup. You can use Varnish to LB NGINX or Apache quite easily by simply installing it and tweaking the default.vcl file. We did a similar setup on a few test VPS's and it worked extremely well.

  As for the templates themselves, the only issue I see is keeping them updated as that's an issue many providers have. With so many updates hitting the repo's and coming from software such as WordPress, Joomla, etc, it's a nightmare to keep them updated and secure and too many people feel that a pre-built image should already be secure, so they leave them as-in and do nothing more and end up getting hacked or defaced as a result.

  Following the guides in the community result in the same end-result, though you can actually see what is being installed, where, and then modify it to suite. If you need full control, a control panel would really be more suited so that you don't have to worry about tinkering with files :-).

  I'm a RuneScape player. Botting is against their ToS not to mention it ruins the game for legitimate players like myself. If I could vote this down I would.

  Our pre-made images will be focused on developer and application stacks like LAMP, LEMP, Rails, Wordpress, etc.

  I like the idea, but as a LEGITIMATE customer I **do not** want to share the node with abusive, other-ToS-violating kiddies like runescape botters.

  I think it goes back to trust. I would love to be able to share images with friends, and would hate to see this feature removed because of malicious users.

  Absolutely, that is one of our main concerns which is why we will be making public how many other users have launched virtual servers from that image and also opening a public commenting system on them so that users can engage in conversation back and forth.

  There will be "official" digitalocean images and we will see how the public side works, we are hopeful that with enough transparency and tools to promote that we will be able to weed out anyone that is malicious.

  If it doesn't work out we'll default back to just our images, but this is something that we will have to test in the wild and see how it goes.

  I would just be careful setting up a "public" image from someone I don't trust. They can setup back door access that you might not be aware of.

  We're actively developing a few pre-built application images and will be opening up the images section to allow customers to make their pre-built images public so that other users can create virtual servers from those as well.
